The Basil Burwell Community Theater (or the BAZZ), home of The Maskers in Belfast Maine has a new lobby. I chose Sherwin Williams Heartfelt as the primary color for the walls to give it a theatrical but warm feeling as you enter the building. The trim is all done in gold, the doors and ceiling mural in indigo blue with gold stars. The mural around the door leading to the green room features my new favorite color, Jazz Age Coral, also Sherwin Williams. The same color is in the mural of Thalia and Melpomone who are the muses that the theater masks are based on. While I was designing the lobby I learned that when the Greeks were heavy into the theater, women were not allowed to perform or even attend. So in order to play the very important roles that women had in their plays, the men made masks to represent them.

Thalia, the muse of comedy and Melpomene, the muse of music and tragedy are here now, unmasked and beautiful to inspire us all and to watch over this fabulous theater.
